From the rule of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s through to the contemporary leadership of Hun Sen, Cambodia’s modern history has been a story of political extremism, genocide and authoritarianism. Less known in this story is Norodom Sihanouk’s, role in establishing a violent and chaotic political culture in 1960s Cambodia. This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of Cambodian politics to develop a basic understanding of modern Cambodian history. It will also incorporate a brief Cambodian travelogue.
