Modernism Architecture in 1930's Palestine

“From the froth of a wave and a cloud I built myself a white city stormy, fluid, beautiful” Naomi Shemer, 1960. Tel Aviv’s ‘White City’ is perhaps the world’s largest collection of 1930’s modernist architecture of angular white cubes with ribbon windows, heavily inspired by the Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. Jerusalem and Haifa have similar examples. This talk will examine specific buildings and neighbourhoods and through them explore a number of interesting themes: modernism, architecture and urban design, conservation plus the history of the founding of Israel.
