The Musical has been a popular form of entertainment for well over a hundred years up until today when block-buster musicals continue to break attendance records. Broadway is healthier than ever. In earlier days, Stephen Sondheim, Richard Rogers and Cole Porter, among others, were household names. Equally well known were the lyrics and tunes of the wide-ranging stories they created. They were part of our lives. This course will cover the history of the musical, concentrating on musicals and their makers, from 1928 to 1986 – a trip down memory lane!


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the course. An overview of the history of the Musical. Some Biographies.
  • Weill and Brecht: The Threepenny Opera; Seven Deadly Sins.
  • Rogers and Hart / Hammerstein: South Pacific; Sound of Music.
  • Cole Porter: Silk Stockings; High Society.
  • Sondheim and Wheeler: Sweeney Todd. Sunday in the Park with George.
  • Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice: Jesus Christ Superstar; and Charles Hart: Phantom of the Opera.
  • Lerner and Lowe: Camelot. Lionel Bart: Oliver.
  • Kern and Hammerstein: Showboat.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Recall the names of composers of six musicals.
  2. Discuss the plots of four musicals.
  3. Discuss the combination of three pairs of composers and lyricists.
