John Lewin had planned to arrive in Sydney in 1799, but when he briefly went on shore to get some paining supplies, his ship set sail without him. His wife was still on board. When he finally got here in 1800, he and Anna Maria quickly became the landscape painters and naturalists of choice. They counted governors and wealthy colonists amongst their patrons and Lewin even decorated Government House. And their Birds of NSW was the first illustrated book in the country.
