Hillary Clinton has been described as one of the most polarising figures in 20th century American public life. She was one of the most qualified candidates in presidential campaign history but still lost, in November 2016, to Donald Trump, a populist and inexperienced candidate. She is the third woman to hold the exalted position of Secretary of State, yet her significant achievements remain controversial and so much of the analysis about her public roles and responsibilities has been contradictory.
