Legends: Saint Nicholas Around the World

Saint Nicholas, an historical 4th century Turkish bishop with a trim waistline, is the main gift giver in many places, differing in many ways from his folkloric descendant, Santa Claus. He bears a variety of titles, costumes, and rituals, all of them concerned with giving, rather than hoarding.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Outline the historical origins of St Nicholas.
  2. Describe some of the folkloric antecedents of gift givers, and midwinter magical characters.
  3. Provide examples of Christmas gift giving characters across many cultures, their similarities and differences, and changes to those characters over the last two centuries.
  4. Identify the sources and meanings of some Christmas rituals.
  5. Take pleasure in encountering a variety of cultural expressions.
  6. Appreciate more aspects of multiculturalism.
  7. Be aware of the ever evolving nature of intangible culture.
