Lebanon: From the Paris of the Middle East to the Cot-Case of the Middle East

Lebanon sits at the crossroads of history. In the midst of ancient, medieval and modern conquerors, it has become a melting pot of peoples and politics. Once the home of the Phoenicians, it has been part of the Persian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Ottoman and French Empires. Today it is a split nation, with competing Islamic and Christian forces. But, in recent decades Lebanon has become embroiled in Israeli, Palestinian and Iranian politics. This course traces the history of Lebanon through all these stages and tries to define what modern day Lebanon is and where its future lies.
