Robbing from the rich to give to the poor- it’s a potent image of justice versus the law, and from Hereward the Wake to Ned Kelly, from Juraj Janucik to Song Jiang, the legend of the Outlaw Hero has been told in many different cultures. When a people are invaded and oppressed it seems a hero will rise up to defend them. Are all of them truly heroes as well as outlaws or is it possible that some might have manipulated the legend for their own ends?


COURSE OUTLINE

  • History of the English legend – Sources and influences, key characters, novels, tv shows, films
  • Characteristics of the Robin Hood character
  • Distinguishing the Robin Hood character from other legendary types – Secret rescuer, Prince of Thieves, Utopian king
  • Three types of Robin Hood characters – Trickster Thief, Class warrior, National defender
  • Examples and non examples from a variety of cultures
  • Contemporary applications of the Robin Hood image


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Know evidence of the origins of the English legend.
  2. Know evolution of the elements within the legend, and the historical context that gave rise to them.
  3. Know the main English-language interpretations in film, television, and fiction.
  4. Know criteria for the definition of a Robin Hood character.
  5. Know examples of Robin Hood/Outlaw Hero characters across many cultures, including historical and legendary features.
  6. Assess to what degree various cultural legends meet the criteria to be called Robin Hood characters.
  7. Apply those criteria to contemporary figures.
  8. Feel pleasure in re visiting old stories, films, and tv shows.
  9. Take delight in new and old stories.
  10. Be aware of the political underpinnings of the legend.
  11. Appreciate the conflicted morality of the character.
