This workshop is designed for beginners. You will be guided step-by-step through the processes needed to produce an illuminated letter based on medieval forms. You will learn how to use 23ct gold leaf, mix a range of colours and apply designs. These techniques could also be used in other forms of art. This workshop is also suitable for those wishing to refresh these skills. Materials are supplied for this course (Cost $25 – not included in course fee).

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Analyse medieval illuminated letters
  • Transfer the chosen letter to opaque paper
  • Learn the techniques for flat and raised gilding
  • Learn to mix and apply a range of colours
  • Application of highlights
  • Discussion of suitable letters for further projects
  • Discussion of ways to apply the techniques to other art forms


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the procedures necessary to reproduce an illuminated letter
  2. Transfer a letter onto opaque paper
  3. Apply gold leaf to a raised and flat base
  4. Explain the process of creating a range of colours
  5. Reproduce an illuminated initial using the given guidelines.
  6. Apply the techniques to other art forms


MATERIALS LIST

  • Scissors
  • Cutting knife (cheap variety with break-off blades)
  • ‘B’ grade pencil
  • Soft eraser
  • Ruler
  • Magnifying glass (can be a cheap variety)
  • Mixing tray for paints eg. ice cube tray, preferably white
  • Red biro with a fine point


IMPORTANT: Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
