COURSE OUTLINE

  • Traditional expressions of love for example “How do I love thee, let me count the ways?” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning
  • Sad, tragic and unrequited expressions of love for example “I vex my heart alone, she is at rest” by Oscar Wilde
  • Exaggerated, humorous and ironic expressions of love for example “she being Brand new” by E. E. Cummings.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and discuss the rich variety of techniques used across a variety of poetic genres to explore the theme of love in poetry.
  2. Differentiate between tone and message through the rhetorical devices used particularly between true love and ironic love.
  3. Unpack poems independently accessing text, sub-text and theme.
