Leonardo da Vinci, who died 500 years ago on May 2, 1519, was without any doubt one of the greatest artists/geniuses who has ever lived. This illustrated lecture will present an overview and assessment of his achievement, interpreting his life, personality and his artistic work within the context of the vibrant Renaissance societies in which he lived in Florence, Milan and at the Court of François I of France.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Attempt to appreciate the extraordinary mind of Leonardo.
  2. Assess the various contemporary accounts of his work, his charisma and his influence on society.
  3. Evaluate the quality of his drawings and paintings and appreciate why many were not totally completed.
  4. Distinguish fact from fiction in the popular legends associated with his name and its aura.
