Looking Back on the British Empires

65 years ago, Ghana was the first British dominion to become a republic, beginning the final chapter in the history of the second British empire. Historians are in no doubt that the two British empires, the 13 colonies in North America, and the second world-wide empire protected by the Royal Navy, changed the history of every part of it, but they differ on whether the changes were for the better, overall.. We look at the story of some of the British dominions, colonies, protectorates, condominiums and mandates, before and after British rule, and try to decide for ourselves.
