Japanese Beginners 1

The course is an introduction to Japanese for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop basic skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing.

  • Japanese for Busy People 1 (Revised 3rd Edition, Romanised Version), publisher: Kodansha, Lessons 1-5.



Nine Sessions that aim to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in elementary Japanese.



Conversational Japanese and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.


  • Pronunciation

  • Introducing yourself; address, work, nationalities, so on

  • (Noun A) wa (noun B) desu, (noun A) wa (noun B) dewaarimasen

  • Numbers from 1 to 100, Time (ji / fun - gogo / gozen)

  • Numbers 100 to 1,000,000,000,000 - buying and selling (Japanese notes)

  • Counting object (abstract system and counting system)

  • Demonstrative words (kore, sore, are)



By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Use basic Japanese effectively for practical communication,

  2. Demonstrate the skills, language and attitudes required for further study of Japanese.

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
