In Search of Alfred the Great: The Warrior King 871-899 AD

Alfred the Great has been described as the first king of the English as a result of his significant victory against “The Great Heathen Viking Army” at the Battle of Edington in 878. Wessex was the only Anglo Saxon kingdom to withstand the Viking onslaughts of the 9th century. Alfred is the only king in English history to be called “The Great”. The 1901 Thornycroft statue of the great Wessex king at Winchester is inscribed “founder of the kingdom and the nation. ” His codification of laws, army and navy reforms, fortifications and his conversion to Christianity formed the foundation of England as a future nation state.
