Learn the technique of Byzantine Icon Painting. Explore the basic ideals and principles as well as symbolism of colours and Byzantine theology on which iconography is founded. Please note that materials for the course are expensive if purchased independently by students. Tutor shares the material with all students and students need to contribute $50 (not included in course fee). A purchase of gold leaf is for advanced students only and needs to be discussed with tutor on the first day. Any other material mentioned by the tutor can be purchased on the day from your tutor or it can be purchased independently.


This course is not suitable for those who are not comfortable using animal based material. The gilding technique is not taught in this class due to need for expensive equipment and a need to work for controlled environment. The tutor shows this technique briefly.


Please note: Attendance in the first two sessions is compulsory due to the need to make the gesso boards. Avoidance to attend the first 2 sessions would require a purchase of an already made gesso board from the tutor (additional $50). No gesso board making would be allowed after the first 2 sessions.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Brief introduction, the ideals and principles of Byzantine iconography, followed by making of a gessoed board.
  • Transferring the image to the gessoed board and making inscriptions with a sharp tool.
  • Working with egg tempera.
  • Work in class, the painting of the icon, putting on the base colours.
  • The egg tempera technique (garments).
  • Painting of first highlights on face and garments.
  • Adding second highlights, cornice and letters.
  • Practice/ future directions.


MATERIALS LIST

  • Dry pigment starter set to be purchased from tutor or from art store
  • Set of brushes
  • Small film containers
  • Gold colour for the background
  • Gesso and special glue
  • Japanese gold size
  • Genuine Gold leaf (advanced students only)


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Create an icon using ancient techniques and natural materials rich with symbolic meaning.
  2. Prepare wooden boards with gesso made from chalk and glue.
  3. Make a gilded looking background with a use of pigments only.
  4. Lear the process of egg tempera painting e.g. mixing pigments, the underling colour theory, preserving the painting.
  5. Acquire knowledge of the underlying theology of the icon.
  6. Learn to draw and paint with confidence various religious themes.


IMPORTANT: Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
