This introductory course is for everyone who is planning to redecorate or simply refresh a living space or complete property. Amongst other activities, you will prepare a number of professional Style Boards, which will not only becomes your anchor for keeping you on track, but also your navigation tool for communication with suppliers, architects, tradespeople etc. Learn about different styles, both historical and thematic, and the importance of the elements and principles of design and layout. A strong focus will be placed on colour theory and finding ways to easily adopt property styling methods into your own home. This practical, informative course will provide methods for you to see the big picture, by practical and theoretical experimentation working with styles, colour and textures.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Navigational Style board uses and preparation.
  • The Elements and Principles of Design.
  • Understanding Colour Theory – The Basics, Schemes, Harmony, Psychology, Light and more.
  • Different styles – Historical, Thematic, Geographic.
  • Stylist Tips for your own interior.
  • Developing a Style Board for your own chosen space.

This course is an equal mix of both theory and practical in-class work.


MATERIALS LIST
Tutor will be supplying canson paper and foamboard for $6 (paid to tutor directly).

  • Scissors
  • Glustick (bostik or similar)
  • Notepad or visual diary
  • Pen/pencil


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Competently prepare a professional looking Style Board.
  2. Gain an understanding of the basics of colour theory and how to utilise it in a selected space.
  3. Understand the elements and principles of design.
  4. Appreciate the importance of layout, shape and proportion.
  5. Appreciate and adapt selected styles whether from history or thematic.
  6. Apply stylist techniques and layouts.
