  • Introduction to writing – purpose, audience, motivation and ‘good’ writing
  • Poetry – includes: techniques, structures, genres; imagery; analysing poems
  • Prose – includes: finding your ‘voice’; context, subtext; plot, theme; complications
  • Plays – includes: setting; dramatic action; characterisation; dialogue; conflict; climax


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Formulate ideas and plots with appropriate structures, tone and ‘voice’ for a chosen genre
  2. Utilise genre-specific techniques for more affective writing
  3. Understand and differentiate between better and poorer writing
  4. Reflect, analyse, respond and critique their own stories and that of published writing
