Intermediate Calligraphy: Art Nouveau Scripts

Art Nouveau is an ornamental style of art most popular between 1890 and 1910 and is characterized by undulating, curving forms inspired by lilies, vines, flower stems and other natural forms. The graphic arts flourished during this period. After studying original sources of the period there will be the opportunity to learn how to design an individual alphabet. These beautiful elegant forms will be used in a variety of projects, including the creation of monograms.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the Art Nouveau period
  • Study the characteristics of the scripts
  • Compare the variation of the individual shapes
  • Experiment with the forms by using historical examples
  • Develop an individual alphabet
  • Apply decorative additions to the alphabet
  • Construct relevant decorative art
  • Combine letterforms and decorative art to produce projects
  • Revision and fine-tuning suitable to the individual's

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Develop an alphabet from a traditional script
  2. Write a script based on the Art Nouveau period.
  3. Design the relevant decorative art
  4. Produce small projects, including monograms

MATERIALS LIST

  • Pencil and eraser for first lesson. Other equipment needed will be discussed.
