I Am Woman: Damsels in Distress, Femme Fatales and Women of Substance

This short course takes a comprehensive yet fun look at three female representations in fiction. Explore how poetry, film, novels and plays present the Damsel in Distress, the Femme Fatale and the Woman of Substance.

This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Damsels in Distress: This week we will explore the concept and history of the damsel in distress across a range of media including Richardson's Clarissa, Austen's Catherine Morland, Lois Lane and Stephen King's Wendy Torrence.
  • Femme Fatales: This week we will explore the fatal siren call of femme fatales from the fabled Sirens, to Keat's La Belle Dame Sans Merci, to Cat woman and the women in such films as Double Indemnity and Fatal Attraction .
  • A Woman of Substance: This week we will explore the women who had the strength of will to be independent and to make a difference around them. Such women include Bronte's Jane Eyre, Mitchell's Scarlett O'Hara, Christina Rossetti's No, Thank You, John and such heroines as Wonder Woman, Ellen Ripley, Erin Brockovich and Lieutenant Uhura.
