COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to law, including the Australian Constitution, the NSW Constitution, public policy, basic legal definitions and the differences between legislation and case law
  • The Court systems in the Australian and NSW jurisdictions, including the development of case law and precedent, statutory interpretation and the structure and operation of the legal profession
  • Corporations law, business structures and some of the principles of business law
  • The Law of Contract and Property Law and Consumer Protection
  • The Law of Torts
  • Criminal Law and the criminal justice system


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
by the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. List the main sources of law in Australia.
  2. Describe the court systems in Australia and New South Wales.
  3. Describe some basic legal concepts, legal terminology and key definitions.
  4. Understand and discuss some of the basic elements of constitutional law in Australia.
  5. Explain some of the connections between public policy and lawmaking.
  6. List and describe the main legal elements of a legally binding contract.
  7. Discuss fundamental elements of corporations law and business structure.
  8. Understand the basic law of property.
  9. Understand the differences between civil wrongs or torts on the one hand and criminal offences on the other.
  10. Explain some of the protections in consumer law.
  11. Describe key concepts in the criminal law and the criminal justice system.
