German Spy Chiefs

A journey into the secret world of German spy chiefs. Explore the history of 6 famous German spymasters from Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, chief of Hitler’s ‘Abwehr’ until 1944, and Paul Leverkuehn, who was Germany’s spy chief in Turkey 1941-1944, to Hitler’s final head of foreign intelligence, Walter Schellenberg. After 1945 Reinhard Gehlen became West Germany’s chief of the Federal Intelligence Service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst, ‘BND’, during the Cold War. In East Germany Erich Mielke was from 1957 until 1989 in charge of the State Security, the ‘Stasi’. Last but not least, the legendary East German foreign intelligence chief Markus Wolf, who for decades was known to Western intelligence officers only as ‘the man without a face’, because they didn’t know what he looked like.

This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.
