Some glamorous inspiration as we look at the literary, historical and social worlds of people whose lives were as creative as their art. Proust, Colette, Gertrude Stein and Cocteau were some of the most remarkable figures of the 20th century and this course explores their fascinating lives and the beautiful city that nurtured them.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Marcel Proust and the glamorous invalid – How he changed the novel, his strange and slightly scandalous life and why his very long book connects social climbing with literature
  • Colette and la Belle Epoque – Her turbulent love life, the productive output of 50 years and the Parisian life observed
  • Gertrude Stein and the artistic life – Poetry, the lifelong love and support of Alice and the art of influence
  • Jean Cocteau, precocious talent and the moving picture – A dangerous author, the great style icon and creative generosity through generations


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a deeper knowledge of some of the great writers of 20th century Paris and use this knowledge to enrich their reading lives.
  2. Comprehend the ways in which literature and image have always fed off each other.
  3. Take their knowledge to broaden their literary, filmic and theatrical experience beyond the course.
  4. Understand how the creative networks of the time worked and what ideas they sought to explore in the Belle Epoque and beyond.
