This course looks at four of the great kings of medieval England. Starting with Henry II, this course shall also look at the lives and reigns of Edward III, Edward IV, and Henry VII. These kings helped shape England through strength of character and leadership. By examining and comparing their personalities and reigns, we shall attempt to discover what lay at the heart of their success.

  • Henry II – Early life. The Anarchy. Eleanor of Aquitaine. Angevin Empire. Relationship with France. Administration, reform and justice. Thomas Becket. The Eagle and his Eaglets. Death and legacy.
  • Edward III – Early life. Family, regency, and ascension. Administration. Relationship with France and the Hundred Years War. The Black Death. Death and legacy: his decedents.
  • Edward IV – Early life. The Wars of the Roses: ascension, overthrow, restoration. Administration and reform. The Woodvilles. Relationship with France. Relationship with his brothers. Death and legacy.
  • Henry VII – Early life. Exile. Claim to the throne. Wars of the Roses. Administration – taxation, justice. Rebellions. Style of rule. Relationship with France and the Continent. Death and legacy: the Tudor dynasty.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  2. Assess why they are regarded as successful monarchs.
  3. Evaluate the extent to which they were good rulers.
