Gdansk (Danzig in German) once was an important city of the Hanseatic League on the shores of the Baltic at the Western end of the Vistula delta. As Poland’s main seaport it has been hotly contested throughout the centuries between Poland and Brandenburg/Prussia and later Germany. In modern times Gdansk gained worldwide attention as the location where the downfall of communism started in the 1980s. A walk around its historic centre and museums should be on every Poland tourist’s itinerary.
