Greece in Focus - Crete

Crete, the largest Greek island, belongs to the Top 5 islands in the Mediterranean Sea and is a haven for fans of archaeology and beach lovers alike. But the mountainous landscapes of the island’s interior have their charm, too. Birthplace and playground of Greek gods, the caves and canyons of Crete reek with mythology. The island capital of Heraklion has seen Minoan, Roman, Arab, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rulers, each of whom have left their mark. Among the 16 million olive trees on the island is one of the world’s oldest, estimated to be over 3,000 years old.
