The Greenhouse Effect: The Central Science of Earth’s (Changing) Climate

The greenhouse effect, and global warming. While these words may be well known, what exactly do they mean? In fact, the natural greenhouse effect serves to raise the Earth’s surface temperatures by ~30 degrees. What is the science behind this? What is it that makes certain trace gases ‘radiatively active’, the technical term for greenhouse gases? How were their atmospheric concentrations kept in balance by nature for so long, and how is human activity upsetting these balances?

This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.
