Imagine yourself a traveller in a distant land. How would you find the height of a tall tree or the width of a river or the distance to a person? We will learn a dozen of methods for doing these estimations, with the help of simple tools made of ordinary things: a measuring tape, a string, a piece of paper, a cap, a small ruler, a hand mirror or just your own palm. Other geometric practices performed barehanded include measuring angular diameter of the Moon and angular distance between stars, and discussion of why we see the Moon larger in the evening than in the night.

Students need to bring paper, pen, ruler and a calculator.

SUGGESTED READING

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Geometric practices in the open air
  • Techniques to estimate the length, the distance, and angular sizes with available objects

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Learn techniques of basic geometrical measurements with the help of self-made instruments.
  2. Learn basic techniques of barehanded estimations of angular size of celestial bodies.
