America has a fine song writing tradition starting from its earliest settlers, the African American influx and its immigrants. Whilst the famous and well known composers are of great interest to us, we will spend some time also looking at the less famous but no less influential American songwriters, their place in history and their influence.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • The Early Years (Early 20th century) - strong and original songwritng. Much of it came from music hall.
  • Mid 20th Century – the move to rock and roll, the basis of modern popular music.
  • The Incredible 60’s. An explosion of song-writing talent that set the standard for all to follow.
  • The 70’s and beyond. From heavy metal, to punk and to rap, and the great song-writing of today.
