Foundations of Story Writing

“And then what happened?” might be the most seductive question in English. In pursuit of these we follow our heroes across vast distances of time and space. Is this your time to discover creative expression? Join us to start your creative writing with a look at plot structure, characters, transformations, genres, settings, scenes and use of language.


This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.


COURSE OUTLINE
Each session will consist of a 10 min introduction, 30 minute content explanation, 30 minute writing in Breakout Rooms with 5 minute 1-1s with each student throughout and a 5 min wrap up and writing homework/activity for the week.

  • Week 1: Settings, Genres, Characters and motivations
  • Week 2: Plot structure, Endings, Beginnings, Transformations, Relationships
  • Week 3: Perspective, Escalating incidents, Scenes, Word choice
  • Week 4: Revising, Sharing Evaluating, Revising


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this workshop students should be able to:

  1. Gain knowledge of the elements of creativity and the elements of constructing a story.
  2. Plan a story, harnessing opportunities for creativity and developing characters.
  3. Give and receive feedback, overcome the barriers to start writing, improve their writing and know why.
  4. Be aware of possibilities and get in touch with the creativity within to feel more like the person you want to be.
  5. Increase their confidence in own abilities to write (instead of “intending to write one day”) and be enthusiastic to start writing.
