First Settler Hawkesbury Women: Fortunes Up, Fortunes Down

The Hawkesbury was a crucible for the clash over resources between Aboriginal peoples, and the penal settlement. How did colonial women fit into this struggle for survival? We look at 3 women: Margaret Catchpole, who, although unschooled, sent letters to England which have survived and give a vivid picture of everyday life at the time; Sarah Hodgkinson whose husband was murdered in an escalating cycle of tit-for-tat violence; and Mrs. Cope, Windsor businesswoman, whose cottage still stands.
