This course is for students who need to communicate with some fluency in French. Students will have the opportunity to focus on specific skills, such as extending vocabulary in given areas, improving written language, and developing a better understanding of specific cultural and social issues. The course uses group discussions and individual presentations by the students on various topics (culture, society, environment etc.) to build on the competencies achieved in previous levels. This course will allow you to practise and improve your speaking and listening skills in French through a wide variety of activities. This is an advanced class which focuses on fluency and conversation. It is assumed that students will have 150 + hours of prior learning.

CLASS PLAN
Nine Sessions that aim to build general advanced comprehension and communication skills in French.


CONTENT
Conversational French and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of higher level language principles.


Topics (as related to textbook)

  • Talking about a country and its inhabitants and stereotypes
  • Understanding and explaining statistics, percentages
  • Talking about living overseas, changes in lifestyles and cultural differences
  • Understanding rules that govern etiquette, a comparative study, and a classification
  • Talking about one’s place of living and justifying one’s choices.

Grammar (as covered in textbook topics)

  • Relative pronouns où and dont
  • Demonstrative pronouns celui, celle, ceux, celles
  • Asking questions using inversions and reflexive pronouns
  • Indefinite pronouns and adverbs: quelqu’un, rien, personne, nulle part, etc.
  • The Superlative
  • using ce qui, ce que, c’est for emphasis
  • Time markers; verbs; and nouns to use when talking about city/countryside life and good manners.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. To communicate in fluent French in a variety of situations.
  2. Increase the skills, vocabulary and study attitude required for continued study of French.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY
If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
