Francis de Groot and the Opening of Sydney Harbour Bridge

On 19 March 1932, after almost ten years of construction, our mighty Harbour Bridge was opened to great fanfare by then State Premier of NSW, Jack Lang. Not without controversy, the big party was almost spoiled by one man - Francis de Groot. The 90th anniversary of this event is a good opportunity for a trip down memory lane - from the first plans to build a bridge across our harbour two centuries ago to Bradfield’s genius and the drama of the opening ceremony. Despite its age and subsequent technical advances in bridge construction, the Harbour Bridge is still one of the biggest bridges in the world.
