This course considers England’s first four female sovereigns – Empress Matilda, Lady Jane Grey, Mary I, and Elizabeth I. Whilst the first two are often not officially listed as monarchs as they were never crowned, they were still regarded as such and invested with that authority at least for a time. The course looks at the lives and reigns of these queens of England, and assesses the impact and influence that they had on their countries, history, and the influence they had on each other.
