Evocations of the Pastoral World

Inspirational pastoral music, spanning the Baroque, Classical and early Romantic eras: Corelli, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Berlioz. The serenity of the music will be complemented by images and both Instrumental and vocal music included – concertos, symphonies, arias, duets, songs, and choruses.

This class will be delivered face-to-face at WEA Sydney. Enrolling students need to ensure they have read the current COVID-19 Safety Guidance that WEA Sydney has put in place before enrolling.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Corelli Concerto Grosso no 6 in G minor; Bach – Sinfonia Christmas Oratorio Part II, Cantata aria ‘Angenehmer Zephyrus’; Handel – excerpts from Acis and Galatea, Orlando, Solomon, L’Allegro il penseroso ed il Moderata, the Pastoral Symphony and several arias from Messiah
  • Mozart ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’ - Cherubino’s arias Acts I and II, Duet ‘Sul aria’ Act III, aria ‘Deh vieni non tardar’ Act IV; Haydn Symphony no 46 in B minor - 2nd movement, Symphony no 83 in G minor ‘La Poule’ – 1st and 2nd movements
  • Beethoven: Pastoral Symphony – extracts, Schubert – selected Lieder, Berlioz L’Enfance du Christ – excerpts

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the outstanding works studied in the course and their composers’ intentions.
  2. Assess the achievements of the various composers in responding to the various stimuli provided by memories and idealisations of the pastoral world.
  3. Distinguish the individual stylistic characteristics of each composer.
  4. Evaluate the very different performances heard in the chosen musical extracts.
