Meet some seminal plays that have shaped theatre history. Meet the writers and what prompted them to write these great plays. Meet the characters and unpack their speeches and motivations. Discover the themes that drive the plays and find out about how they could or should be staged.


This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.

  • Introducing the golden age of theatre with Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and the staging of comedy
  • Introducing the modern era and the concept of naturalism in Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull
  • Introducing epic theatre and the breaking of the fourth wall to make social commentary through Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera
  • Introducing American realism through Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh
  • Introducing the concept of characters' perspectives and personal compromise in Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire
  • Introducing the Theatre of the Absurd through Eugene Ionesco’s quirky play, The Chairs
  • Introducing the post-modern theatre with Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of the impact of the author’s context and the context of historical time upon a play.
  2. Analyse and discuss the themes and sub-text of the plays including characterisation and motivation.
  3. Explore, reflect and review the depth and variety of interpretations available to readings of these plays in performance.
