Election Day 2024 is being called the most consequential American election of our times, again! The election delivered surprises and triumphs, but what will the outcome mean for the next four years? We will look at the election process and what happens next. We will consider the role of the Electoral College, that peculiar American institution, and the timeline for confirming the election result. Could there be more surprises?

COURSE OUTLINE

  • The electoral process, including the Electoral College and the role of state governments and agencies in the electoral process, especially in counting and confirming the vote
  • The election timetable in the United States, including when the vote will be finalised and how legal challenges are processed
  • The role of the US Congress in confirming the vote
  • Likely consequences of the election result
  • Domestic and international reaction to the election outcome

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the fundamental elements and processes of the US electoral system, including the timetable for confirming the election result
  2. Understand the results of the vote count and likely consequences in the United States and internationally
