Does Language Exert Power?

Power relationships are often manifested through language in a way that favours and maintains dominance of particular groups over others. At the same time, language power is manifested through its ability to influence others with words, and maintain national cohesion or conflict. An overview of the domains where power can be exerted and preserved through language, with a focus on the role of English; and how, in the past and in the present, this language has been used to inflict and perpetuate power dynamics. Designed for anyone who is interested in the broad topic of language and its role in our societies.
