Inspirational holiday music, written by: Handel in the English countryside, Mozart in the Netherlands and Italy, Beethoven at Heiligenstadt, Schubert in Hungary, Mendelssohn in Italy and Scotland, Brahms at Pörtschach in Austria, Dvořak in the USA, Liszt in Italy, Grieg in Denmark and England, and Messager and Faurë in the picturesque fishing village of Villerville in Normandy.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Selections from Handel’s serenatas, church music, and oratorios composed during his time at Cannons, and during his summer holidays in the English countryside; music by the young Mozart composed while on tour in the Netherlands and Milan
  • Music by Beethoven composed in the rural setting of Heiligenstadt outside Vienna; music composed by Schubert while in the Hungarian countryside; music by Mendelssohn composed during his tours of Italy and Scotland
  • Music by Brahms composed at the Austrian resort of Pörtschach; music by Grieg composed in Copenhagen and England; music by Fauré and Messager written for the fishing village of Villerville in Normandy


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the outstanding works studied in the course and appreciate the special circumstances which occasioned their composition.
  2. Assess the achievements of the various composers in responding to the various stimuli provided by their holidays and tours.
  3. Distinguish the individual stylistic characteristics of each composer.
  4. Evaluate the different performances heard in the chosen musical extracts.
