Composers do not write in a vacuum. They are influenced by the world around them; the social, political and economic. This series looks at the lives of 7 composers and explores how the society in which they lived affected their musical output and their lives.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Johann Sebastian Bach (1683-1750) - In his lifetime J.S Bach was known as a brilliant organist and teacher rather than as a spectacular composer. How was this possible?
  • Ludwig von Beethoven (1770-1827) - Beethoven’s life mirrors some of the most tumultuous events in European history including the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna. All these events affected his writing and musical output.
  • Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) - A musical war raged during Brahms' lifetime, the conservatives against the radicals. Brahms and his friends were firmly in the musically conservative camp. How did this ‘war’ play out?
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – Mozart’s life seems to be shrouded in mystery. We know so many ‘facts’ about Mozart’s life but this class looks at the ‘truths’.
  • Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) - Tchaikovsky is considered Russia’s most popular composer but also the first Russian composer to make a lasting impression internationally. While straddling both worlds many thought he was selling out to the West.
  • Richard Wagner (1813- 1883) vs. Giuseppe Verdi (1813- 1901) – This class looks at the importance of personality in music. How can two such different composers be writing for the same art form at exactly the same time?
