Calligraphy for Intermediate: Copperplate

Calligraphy is a fascinating art form that can be enjoyed by everyone. This term we will be concentrating on the elegant 17th century Copperplate scripts. You will learn the art of flourishing, as well as how to apply layout and design principles to produce projects. We will complete the course by experimenting with modern copperplate forms.


For classes held at WEA Sydney, materials for new students will be organised at the first meeting. Please bring $30 cash to purchase the kit. (not included in the course fee)


DELIVERY MODE

  • This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom.
  • This course requires students to have an email, a reliable internet connection, a microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to the Copperplate scripts and their historical background.
  • Learn to use a flexible nib to write a Copperplate alphabet.
  • Experiment with a variety of letter shapes
  • Discover ways of combining the upper and lower case alphabet.
  • Explore nib and line relationship
  • Develop drawn Copperplate forms.
  • Experiment with word designs.
  • Apply basic layout and design principles to a practical project
  • Revision and fine-tuning suitable to the individual’s needs.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write a Copperplate script using a flexible nib.
  2. Construct drawn letterforms in this script.
  3. Produce basic projects incorporating these skills.
