Calligraphy: Intermediate

Completed a basic course and wish to use more advanced techniques to extend your calligraphy knowledge? Is it some time since you did any calligraphy and would like to refresh your calligraphic skills? Join us in a friendly, stimulating atmosphere working on class projects or one of your own choice. No new equipment needed.


  • Discussion of the project. Choice of a script in relationship to the project. Examine the historical background and relationship of this script to modern versions. Learn to write the script using more advanced techniques.
  • Complete the script. Formulate ideas for the project.
  • Discuss and create a variety of relevant layouts and designs. Explore nib and line relationship and interlinear spacing.
  • Decorate the letterforms, use colour and flourishes if applicable. Combine all the elements and work toward the finished project.
  • Work toward the finished project.
  • Complete the project.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Relate a script to a chosen project.
  2. Write a script with more understanding of its characteristics.
  3. Apply more advanced techniques to a script.
  4. Create a variety of suitable layout designs.
  5. Decorate letterforms, use colour and add flourishes if applicable.
