This class is a combined Beginners 2 and 3. It is suitable for students at either of these levels.
This course is an introduction to Chinese for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. This course is recommended for people working in the general travel sector who need to communicate at a basic level with Chinese clients.


TEXT: New Practical Chinese Reader (2nd ed.), Beijing Language and Culture University Press, Book 1, covering Lesson 5 to Lesson 8.


CLASS PLAN
Nine Sessions that aim to build general basic comprehension and communication skills in elementary Chinese.


CONTENT
Conversational Chinese and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.


Topics (as related to text book)

  • Chinese Initials and Finals, Phonetics
  • Four tones reviews
  • Interjection oh
  • Refusing or declining
  • Asking a direction and ask some one to repeat something
  • Meeting some one for the first time
  • Making suggestions
  • Making comments

Grammar (as covered in textbook topics)
Question with an interrogative pronoun
• Sentences with a verbal predicate
• Attributives expressing possession
• Abbreviated question with also


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Ask about directions if you are lost.
  2. Suggest to your friends to do things with you together.
  3. Introduce yourself and your friends to others.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY
If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
