This course is an introduction to Chinese for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. It follows on from Beginners 3 and is suitable for anyone who has completed this, or an equivalent program.

TEXTBOOK

  • New Practical Chinese Reader (2nd ed.), Beijing Language and Culture University Press, Book 1, covering Lesson 11 to Lesson 12.

CLASS PLAN

Nine Sessions that aim to build general elementary comprehension and communication skills in Chinese.


CONTENT

Conversational Chinese and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.

  • Asking about time
  • Express one’s ability
  • Expressing permission or prohibition
  • Talking about one’s health
  • Expressing one’s desire
  • Expressing needs and necessities
  • More characters and structures
  • How soften your tone of speech
  • Optative verbs like can, able, may, should and would
  • Sentences with serial verb phrases as purpose
  • Sentences with double objects
  • Alternative questions

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Expressing what you can do and what you should or may do.
  2. Seeing a doctor and be able to describe what health problems you have.
  3. Expressing what you would like and willing to do.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICY

If you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
