Hand embroidery is an age-old craft which is both relaxing and calming. Learn basic embroidery stitches and discover a modern take on a traditional craft. Explore ways of creating pattern, line and texture as well as discussing composition and use of colour to create visual excitement and harmony. Over the course of two mornings, create a stitched piece in a relaxed, experimental and supportive environment.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Discuss tools: needles, use of hoop, materials and threads
  • Examples of embroidery: tutor’s work, books and photos
  • How to select thread and how start and finish threads
  • A range of embroidery techniques demonstrated
  • Discuss ways of using stitches together to create different effects and images


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Have knowledge of a range of embroidery stitches which can be used to embellish textiles
  2. Understanding of tools and materials
  3. Create a small stitched free-form artwork


MATERIALS LIST

  • Various sized hand sewing needles, including a “darner” or a "straw needle"
  • Needle threader
  • A range of threads for stitching: cotton embroidery threads, sewing machine thread, fine wool yarn
  • Piece of natural, unpatterned fabric no smaller than 30 × 30 cm in size, e.g. linen, medium weight cotton or linen/cotton mix
  • A pair of small, sharp scissors


IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
