SUGGESTED READING

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Revisiting the Rise of Radical Right Politics: 2018/9 has seen a significant global consolidation of Populist Politics - here locally, & in Europe, the USA & Latin America. The publication of Salvatore Babones' ‘The New Authoritarianism : Trump, populism, & the tyranny of experts’(named by The Wall Street Journal as one of the ‘Best reads 2018’) gives us a real insight into better understanding this phenomenon.
  • Explaining Contemporary Geo-Political Shifts – Marx vs. Darwin/Dawkins: Marx’s dictum, ‘All history is the history of class conflict’, is a worthy contender for explaining the rise & decline of Empires. However the newly crafted Darwinian/Dawkins Gene-centred theory casts Geo-political conflicts as the ‘blind’ playing-out of evolutionary forces. We assess the merits of both.
