Few Queens of France are as controversial as Catherine de Medici, born of merchant stock, and elevated to the highest position at the court of France through her marriage to the future Henry II. Her intelligence and her energy were boundless, her passion for her family and her appetite for revenge also knew few bounds. As regent for her three younger sons, Catherine provide a stabilising influence in the interminable Wars of Religion, which pitted Catholic against Protestant and culminated in the infamous St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572.
