Designed to introduce people to the Uncial script, its rich history and the art of Celtic knot work and decoration focusing on the Uncial Script and its origins. Gain an understanding of working with a chisel shaped nib. Focus on letter construction, pen angles and spacial awareness.


A calligraphy kit will be available for new students at a cost of $30 (this cost is not included in course fees)


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to writing with a chisel shaped nib by creating pen patterns.
  • Introduction to the Uncial hand, its style, letter construction and characteristics.
  • Continue to study letter form and spacing and further refine our skills.
  • Look at all things Uncial – variations of this script, numerals and the beautiful Celtic designs and knot work.
  • The introduction of colour, layout and design skills using Celtic design to create a piece of work or personalized project.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Construct letters and numerals of Uncial hand.
  2. Achieve spacial awareness.
  3. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape.
  4. Achieve basic Celtic designs.
  5. Achieve an understanding of layout and design skills.
  6. Apply colour and design techniques.
  7. Apply all learned skills to a piece of work or project.


MATERIALS LIST

  • A4 or A3 bond layout pad – Canson or similar brand from Art stores
  • Chisel shaped nibs such Brause, Speedball C NIBS , William Mitchell – large, medium and small size.
  • Pen holder
  • Ink- Black Sumi ink or Chinese stick ink
  • Gouache – a few different colours – black + a primary colour set.
  • Ruler, pencil HB
  • Water jar, rag.
  • Other supplies will be advised if needed throughout the course.


IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
