Calligraphy for Beginners: Medieval Fraktur

This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich history and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet. This module the focus will be on the Medieval Fraktur hand and its origins. We will start with gaining an understanding of working with a chisel shaped nib continuing to refine our calligraphic technique by focusing on letter construction, pen angles and spacial awareness. This course is designed for beginners.

This class will be delivered online via the online platform Zoom. Enrolling students need to ensure they have an email, a reliable internet connection, microphone/speakers and access to a tablet, smartphone or computer.


  • Introduction to writing with a chisel shaped nib by creating pen patterns.
  • Introduction to the Fraktur script, its style, letter construction and characteristics.
  • We will continue to study letter form and spacing and further refine our skills.
  • We will study Capitals and their origins and combine them with the lower case Fraktur.
  • Introduction to period manuscript page decoration.


By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write with a chisel shaped nib.
  2. Construct letters and numerals of the Fraktur hand.
  3. Achieve spacial awareness.
  4. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape.
  5. Achieve an understanding of layout and design skill.
  6. Achieve an understanding of period decoration.


For classes held at WEA Sydney's premises, a Calligraphy Kit is available for new students for $30 (not included in course fee)

  • A4 or A3 BOND layout pad
  • Pen holder and small broad edge nibs – 1mm &1.5mm in size
  • Ink, Gouache or coloured pencils for painting.
  • Ruler, pencil HB and sharpener
  • Water jar, rag.
  • Other supplies will be advised if needed throughout the course.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
