This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich History and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet.


Calligraphy Kit available for new students for $30 (not included in course fee)


COURSE OUTLINE
The course will teach you how to write with a chisel shaped pen and nib, progressing onto working with ink and Gouache. It will instruct you on the construction of letter form, shape and spacing of the simply beautiful Carolingian script.

  • Introduction to writing with a chisel shaped nib by creating pen patterns. Introduction to the Caroline Script its style, letter construction and characteristics.
  • Study letter form and spacing and continue to refine our skills.
  • Study the Roman Capitals and numerals that accompany this script.
  • Focus on combining upper and lower case letters.
  • Look at Manuscript decoration in combination with text.
  • Introduce colour, layout and design skills with the idea of developing a project.
  • Revision of the previous weeks whilst producing a small piece of work or personalized project.


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write with a chisel shaped nib.
  2. Construct letters and numerals of a set script.
  3. Achieve spacial awareness.
  4. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape.
  5. Achieve an understanding of layout skills.
  6. Apply colour and design principals.
  7. Apply all learned skills to a piece of work or project.


MATERIALS LIST

  • A4 or A3 bond layout pad – Canson or similar brand from Art stores
  • Chisel shaped nibs such Brause, Speedball C NIBS , William Mitchell – large, medium and small size.
  • Pen holder
  • Ink- Black Sumi ink or Chinese stick ink
  • Gouache – a few different colours – black + a primary colour set.
  • Ruler, pencil HB
  • Water jar, rag.
  • Other supplies will be advised if needed throughout the course.


IMPORTANT: Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
