This course is designed to introduce people to the Art of Calligraphy, its rich history and an understanding of the development of our Modern Alphabet. This module the focus will be on the Akim Cursive Script which was designed by German Calligrapher Hans-Joachim Burget. We will start with gaining an understanding of working with a pointed nib continuing to refine our calligraphic technique by focusing on letter construction, design and spacial awareness. This course is designed for beginners-intermediate students. A Calligraphy kit will be available for purchase from the tutor for $35 so that correct materials can be purchased. Please note that this is not included in course fees nor is the purchase of this kit compulsory.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction to writing with a pointed nib by creating strokes that we use to construct the script.
  • Introduction to Akim Cursive, its style, letter construction and characteristics.
  • We will continue to study letter form and spacing and further refine our skills.
  • We will work with different tools and mediums to create designs using Akim.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, student should be able to:

  1. Write with a pointed nib
  2. Construct letters of the hand
  3. Achieve spatial awareness.
  4. Achieve analytical skills for letter form and shape.
  5. Gain an application of design elements

MATERIALS LIST

  • Pointed Nib – Zebra or Nikko G
  • Sumi Ink or gouache – black and other colours you may wish to work with
  • A4 bond layout pad
  • Water jar
  • Pencil, ruler

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
